Marvell Technology is making a major push into the increasingly competitive market for custom artificial-intelligence chips, as technology companies look for alternatives to relying entirely on Nvidia’s powerful but expensive general-purpose GPUs.
The semiconductor company has raised its long-term revenue expectations, driven largely by demand for custom chips designed specifically for large-scale AI workloads. Marvell expects its custom-chip business to become a significant contributor to future growth as major technology companies invest heavily in their own AI infrastructure.
Unlike general-purpose processors, custom AI accelerators can be designed around the specific requirements of a company's workloads. This can allow hyperscalers to optimise performance, energy consumption and computing costs for particular AI applications.
That strategy puts Marvell in an increasingly important part of the AI hardware race. Companies such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft have already developed or commissioned specialised processors to reduce their dependence on third-party chips and gain greater control over their computing infrastructure.
The development also reflects a broader shift in the semiconductor industry. AI companies are no longer competing solely over who can build the most powerful processor. Efficiency, customisation and the ability to process AI workloads at enormous scale are becoming equally important.
For Marvell, the opportunity is to become the technology partner behind these specialised AI systems. If demand for custom accelerators continues to grow, the company could become an increasingly significant challenger in an AI-chip market long dominated by Nvidia.
